EFFECTS OF FORMER MINING ACTIVITIES ON SURFACE WATER. CASE STUDY: VALEA VINULUI MINE – ROMANIA

ABSTRACT

The main objectives of the present study were: (1) to evaluate the impact of acid drainage, from the former Valea Vinului mine on the quality of Valea Băilor creek and (2) to propose a treating method for the acid mine waters generated by the investigated mine. The waste waters sampled from the former Valea Vinului mine proved to be highly acidic having a pH between 3.1 and 5.2. The monthly fluctuation showed that during March 2016 and April 2016/2017 the waste waters were highly acidic. The acidic mine waters had high levels of EC (948 – 2650 μS/cm), TDS (569 – 1590 mg/l) and salinity (0.2 – 1.4 ‰), reflecting the high amount of dissolved salts. Acidic mine waters had low levels of chloride (2.6 – 12.7 mg/l) and nitrates (1.9 – 25.3 mg/l for NO3-), and high levels of sulphates (971.6 – 1945.9 mg/l), Fe (2.2 – 5.7 mg/l), Zn (10.5 – 10.8 mg/l), and Cu (0.2 – 0.5 mg/l). Based on the obtained results, Valea Băilor creek is contaminated only by copper and zinc. Kaolin proved to be an effective solution in neutralizing the acidic mine waters, and can be an alternative for the classical neutralization. The kaolin powder neutralization did not induced significant changes for the TDS value, comparing to NaOH and NaHCO3 neutralization.
