POROUS ASPHALT AS A TRAFFIC NOISE REDUCER

ABSTRACT
In this paper, the influence of pavement’s wearing course on traffic noise is presented. Three road’s construction test sections were researched: porous asphalt, stone mastic asphalt, and sett pavement. Examined road’s section made of porous asphalt is in use for 10 years on national road 6 and it was one of the first in Poland.
On the research sections, the vehicles’ maximum sound level and velocity were measured. Measurements were performed according to Statistical Pass-By (SPB) method. It is based on measurements of maximum sound level, coming from a statistically significant number of passages of various categories of vehicles. At the same time the vehicles’ velocity is measured. Due to the differences in technical condition and quality of vehicles in traffic flow, for the researches presented in this paper, the SPB method modified by the author was used. In this case, only free passages of passenger cars were taken into consideration (minimum time space between cars should be at least 7 seconds in front and 4 seconds behind the measured vehicle).
Due to the high content of air voids, porous asphalt is considered to be a traffic noise reducer. In this paper, it was examined whether those proprieties are maintained despite the lapse of time.
