ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY FEEDING UNITS FOR HIGH CAPACITY PUMPING MODULES

ABSTRACT
The article is focused on the recent progress in the area of feeding units (small – medium size boosting pumps), often needed within the high capacity pumping processes. This need as one type of civil protection modules, mitigating effects of both natural and man-made disasters, was specified within European Commission Decision 2010481 (2010/481/EU, Euratom). During the solution phase of a previous project called “Research on a high-capacity pumping module under emergency situations”, there arose a need for boosting the suction head of the high-performance pump. For such purpose, only one type of tactically effective type of feeding pump (with a weight of up to 120 kg) is used – a hydraulic pump (HydroSub) with a hazard of small oil leakages into the water environment.
The high capacity pump itself is usually heavy (around thousands of kilograms) and placed 20 to 40 meters above the water surface. To counter previously mentioned issues, two new variants of booster pumps are currently under development within the new research project – a hydrodynamic one (HD) and an electric one.
Both of these booster pumps should be more environmentally friendly than the hydraulic one and during the design, development and production phases, special focus will be given to the ecological solution at the end. For example, the HD aggregate should be equipped with working water-lubricated and cooled bearings and the overall design eliminates any harmful emissions to the atmosphere or to the water.
