BLOOM CHARACTERISTICS AND STRENGTH PERFORMANCE OF BIODEGRADABLE PVA/SAGO STARCH BLEND WITH TWO DIFFERENT PLASTICISERS

ABSTRACT
In this study, a modified of PVA/Sago Starch polymer had been investigated to meet main demand of application for the development of drug delivery system. Sago starch, main food item had been used in many applications and this investigation exploits the use of sustainable sago starch as hard capsule for biomedical application. PVA had been formulated in specified ratio between ranges of 37.5%, 42.5% and 47.5% of PVA with starch and plasticisers.. Two different plasticizer systems were employed using glycerol and sorbitol with composition varying between 5% and 10%. Mechanical properties example tensile strength, elongation and modulus were tested to measure the strength of PVA Starch blend. The bloom test was carried out to test the strength ability of gel and elasticity of samples. It was found that the highest the amount of sago starch 47.5% had exhibited highest bloom strength which is 713.33g. Tensile strength showed increasing starch of 47.5% had resulted in lowest tensile strength 3.12 MPa with combination of glycerol and sorbitol plasticizer (5% each) while the highest tensile strength were exhibited by 47.5% PVA with sorbitol as plasticiser. PVA assist in the bonding between starch as it has film forming properties. Bloom test showed highest elasticity for sample with highest PVA 47.5% with combination of glycerol and sorbitol while the lowest exhibited by lowest amount of PVA 37.5% with combination of 10% glycerol only.
