EXPECTATIONS AND RISKS TO THE METHOD OF OBTAINING FUELS BASED ON UNDERGROUND COAL GASIFICATION

ABSTRACT

The article is focused on an identification of legal, environmental and social requirements related to the maintenance of Principles of Sustainable Development. Growing world demand for energy, including fuel, encourages the search for new energy sources. Requirements for safety and environmental protection are becoming more demanding, and as a consequence, the obtaining process of new fuel sources is becoming more complicated. The majority of technical requirements can be fulfilled at the present stage of engineering and technology development. Conducted analysis have also revealed that, in the light of the PSD and the current state of the art, energy generation from fossil fuels is still beneficial. The challenging part of the method is the way of obtaining energy from those fuels. Classic methods of mining that involve the extraction of raw materials which are then transported to the surface to be processed into energy, are slowly beginning to compete with other methods. One of them is based on a way of converting the solid fuel to gas carried out in the area where the mineral is deposited. Later, the gas is transported to the surface. After the underground gasification process and purification, the gas is ready for immediate use as energy or for further processing (e.g. by raw material for chemical synthesis).
This paper, using the SWOT analytical method, synthetically identifies the expectations and potential risks to obtaining fuel by underground gasification.
Results of the analysis were used to identify the barrier, which could pose a risk for the development of obtaining fuel in the process of underground gasification. The same analysis has revealed the potential of new geotechnical technologies in the obtaining process of valuable raw materials.
