THE EVALUATION OF SURFACE WATER QUALITY IN TERMS OF RESOURCE AND HABITAT FUNCTIONS

ABSTRACT

Mining is associated with the extraction and processing of large masses of rock. It is a powerful factor of the environment conversion. All components of the natural environment – abiotic and biocenosis that exist in this area, are changed as a result of the impact of mining activities. Surface water, as well as other components of the natural environment, always has two functions: resource and environment-forming. During mining the influence is appeared on both functions. In the process of studying of river water quality these functions should be considered together.
Problems of state assessment of the Vyya river in the zone of mining influence are considered in the article. Wastewater flows into the Vyya river. Nitrate-ions that are included in wastewater are the most problematic specific river pollutant.
Assessment of the river state is made on the base of monitoring results and environmental studies. The resource and habitat functions of the river have been studied. Integral and hydrochemical water quality indicators are used to assess the river state. These factors include the chemical composition of water, the degree of zooplankton biocoenosis saprobity, the ratio of species of zooplankton community; abundance, biomass and species composition of zoobenthos organisms, species diversity of fish.
A high content of nitrate-ions in the waters of the river below the mining wastewater flows has been revealed during the studies. The affected area covers 7 km from the mining wastewater flows. Resource function of the river is broken. However, the river environment-forming function is not impaired and meets to zonal values. Aquatic ecosystems are in a stable condition. Integral indicators of the ecological state – saprobic index, biological diversity, indicators of zoobenthos status confirm that the water is clean with high species diversity of fish fauna.
