ABSTRACT

Progress and technology have enabled human kind to use nature, progressively, far beyond sustainability, which is why the current consumption exceeds the carrying capacity of existing natural capital.
Analysis of ecological footprint overcome the difficulties of the carrying capacity concept, beginning with the assumption that each consumption category of resource, just as any emissions of waste, needs a bio capacity of production and a capacity of absorption. The analysis of the ecological footprint for the Romanian West Region of Development, was done defining an area of territory production in different ecological categories (agricultural land, pastures, forests, and so on) that is necessary to provide all the resources of energy and materials consumed and to absorb all the wastes that are generated.
The ‘ecological footprint’ indicator calculated for the Romanian West Region of Development indicate an overconsumption comparative with the availability of resources and services provided by nature.
A sustainable consumption does not necessary mean to reduce the consumption but to change the consumption behavior. Looking to different analyzed categories (agricultural land, pastures, forests, sea, built up area, and so on) that are required to provide all the resources of energy and materials consumed by a population, we are looking to propose a set of measures in order to reduce the ecological footprint and, of course, the environmental impact upon region.
