UTILIZING GIS METHODOLOGIES IN THE SELECTION OF SUITABLE VINEYARD SITES IN KOSOVO

ABSRACT
Sustainable development of agriculture depends on the planning and implementation of good policies towards land. These policies are key in controlling land degradation and improve land use dedicated for agriculture as well [11]. Currently vineyard areas in Kosovo are managed by GIS and Web technology, incorporated in a unified IT system which is owned by Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development [3].
However, in case of new demands from farmers to establish new vineyards, Ministry is not able to provide more accurate advices about suitable areas. Thus, this study offers application of GIS methodologies and tools in determining suitable areas for vineyards in Kosovo. This was achieved by modeling and incorporating factors related to Digital Elevation Model (DEM), slope, aspect, soil and land cover. Information about vineyard suitable areas will serve to Ministry which afterwards could provide them to farmers which will be sufficiently accurate in terms of location and area as well. The ultimate goal is to closely support decision making of Ministry of Agriculture, as responsible institution for policy planning in the field of viticulture.
