As a consequence of lately developing technology the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are extending rapidly in various domains of activity. Starting from data obtained from different sources they are capable to assemble them, to process them and to analyze them, to elaborate and to present geo-referenced information contributing in an essential mode to territory management.
Accurate cartographic feature extraction, map updating, digital city models and 3D city models in urban areas are essential for many applications, such as mapping of buildings and their heights, simulation of new buildings, military operations, disaster management, updating and keeping cadastral databases current, and virtual reality.
This paper highlights the development of GIS applicability in urban management. With all these information short, medium and long term strategies can be developed, regarding urban planning and management in the context of general sustainable development.
Also, the importance of the paper lies in the GIS application role, as an efficient management tool for a vast amount of spatial urban relevant data thus contributing at the optimization of the activity carried on by the local administrations.
