ITERATIVE TECHNIQUE OF MULTIPLICATIVE NOISE REDUCTION IN DIGITAL IMAGES

ABSTRACT

In the paper the problem of multiplicative noise suppression in digital images is addressed. The proposed solution is utilizing the bilateral filter with small kernel support, which is iteratively used to smooth the image, while preserving its edges and small details. The novelty of the proposed solution lies in the iterative application of the filtering kernel with decreasing smoothing parameter, so that the denoising process converges after just a few filter passes. The new technique was evaluated on a set of standard gray scale test images contaminated with multiplicative noise modelled using Gaussian and uniform distribution. The extensive comparison using various quality metrics, performed on a set of standard test images against the state-of-the-art techniques designed to cope with speckle noise, revealed very high efficiency of the proposed filtering framework.
