THE USE OF GIS TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF DEGRADED LANDS BY EROSION

ABSTRACT
Worldwide, the erosion is one of the biggest problems of mankind, vital for economic progress and stability for the environment. The use and management of natural resources, especially those of soils, have had a number of positive consequences but also unfavorable, unexpected or undesirable. Currently, many soils are more or less eroded or affected by other phenomena of degradation, decreasing the capacity of production or losing it completely, becoming unproductive or they are contaminated with NOx, NOy and toxic substances at a level that seriously affect quality and/or quantity of crop production. For the study of degraded lands through erosion, the Aldeni commune in Buzau County, located in the Curvature Subcarpathians, in the center of Romania, on Slănic valley, was chosen.
The aim of this paper is to assess the potential erosion affected places in this area using GIS technologies. The output of this study can be used in order to reduce the negative consequences of erosion and to propose ameliorative measures of bringing the land into production.
