STUDY OF SOIL LOSS QUANTITY ON THE ARABLE TERRITORIES USING ESTIMATIONS OF SOIL POLLUTANTS MIGRATION AND GEOMORPHOMETRIC PARAMETERS OF THE MICRORELIEF

ABSTRACT
Agricultural use of the territories, which are complicated with erosional relief, makes it necessary to conduct research and monitoring of erosion processes on these territories. On the other hand, the investigations of the soil runoff character and the features of soil pollutants migration (e.g. pesticides, radionuclides of artificial origin, etc.) that associated with runoff are also necessary for the implementation of precision agriculture. The correct information concerning current and forecasted amount of soil loss and soil pollutants distribution allows organizing and carrying out the efficient land use and land recultivation.
The project scope was established as the estimation of soil loss amounts in the elements of ancient and modern erosion network. Additional important task was the detection of math relations between quantitative parameters (geomorphometric parameters) of the microrelief elements (landforms with dimensions from few meters to a few tens of meters) and the amount of soil runoff. The study is based on field data, which were collected on arable slopes in the upper Oka river basin (Orel region, Russia).
Study was conducted in three phases: field, cameral and analytical. Field phase included survey of positions of the stream thalwegs, leveling of the watershed surface, and soil sampling. Cameral phase included processing of the leveling and survey data, preparation of the soil samples, and visualization of the map layers in geoinformational software. Analytical phase included radiological analysis of soil samples, calculation of geomorphometric parameters and modeling of dependencies between the magnitude of the cesium-137 activity and values of some geomorphometric parameters (i.e. catchment area, profile curvature, etc.).
As a result of investigations, some calculation algorithms for soil loss estimation were proposed. These algorithms describe the dependences of the cesium-137 activity with the catchment area and profile curvature (which allows to take into account the difference of the intensity of soil runoff at the concave and convex sectors of the slope). These findings make it possible to improve the accuracy of the soil loss calculation for arable slopes complicated with erosional landforms at the region of research.
