STATIC AND DYNAMIC TESTING OF A CONCRETE BRIDGE IN BUCHAREST

ABSTRACT
The construction process for a bridge consists in several stages including preliminary design, design, construction and as a final stage, the testing on site. For existing bridges, the tests have as final purpose to establish if the structure still remains safe under service loads and if a strengthening program has to be followed. The tests carried out on new bridges justify the accuracy of the performed design and the correctness of the construction.
In Romania, the testing procedure for bridges comprises two phases: the first one consists in testing the bridge under static and the second under dynamic loads. Usually the static loads are in fact groups of trucks, placed in several position on the bridge superstructure, in order to achieve peak values of vertical displacements and stresses which are close to those considered in the design. The dynamic loading of the bridge is produced by one or more trucks crossing the bridge at some speed levels and passing over an artificially produced obstacle, in order to induce an impulse at the superstructure level. In this case, the dynamic response of the bridge in terms of stresses and frequency related variables as acceleration, velocity and displacements are to be monitored.
This paper presents the results obtained following the static and dynamic testing of a concrete bridge in Bucharest. Moreover, the results were checked through numerical analyses performed using a finite element model. Finally, a comparison between measured and calculated values is shown and the response of the bridge evaluated.
