STUDIES ON THE POISSON COEFFICIENT OF PLIOCENE CLAYS ON THE TERRITORY OF SOFIA CITY

ABSTRACT
Poisson’s ratio is a quantity representing the ratio of the horizontal to the vertical strains. This quantity gives the relationship between tensor stresses and strains. The value of Poisson’s ratio depends on the type of soil variety and the stressed state of the soil.
Samples of Pliocene clays from the territory of Sofia City were studied in a tri-axial apparatus to determine the effect of the stressed state of the soil on Poisson’s ratio. The apparatus is adjusted for direct measurement of the absolute axial and radial strains.
The relationships of the relative axial and radial strains and Poisson’s ratio on the deviator of stress have been analyzed. The analysis served to determine the interval of stress in which Poisson’s ratio should be determined.
