THE EXPERIENCES FROM CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATIONS OF THE EXPERIMENTAL UNDERGROUND HEAT STORAGE RESERVOIR IN THE CAMPUS OF VSB – TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF OSTRAVA

ABSTRACT

VSB – Technical University of Ostrava has a possibility to investigate changes in the
rock massive during operation of heat pumps. Our new University Hall is heated up by
the heat pumps. This object is the biggest building in the Czech Republic and in the
Central Europe which uses this type of the system. Monitoring boreholes are situated in
the area of heat pumps boreholes. They are equipped with heat sensors which monitor
temperature changes in rock massive during the heat pumps operation. This locality is
called Large Research Polygon and the main goal is investigation of changes in the rock
massive due to utilization of this heating system.

Second locality is called Small Research Polygon. It is situated near The University Hall
and consists of two heat pumps boreholes and nine monitoring boreholes in the
surroundings. All of these boreholes are equipped with temperature sensors (similar like
the Large Research Polygon) used for monitoring of heat changes in the rock massive
during heating (accumulation of heat that comes from air conditioning in summer) and
during cooling (pumping of heat from the rock massive by heat pumps in winter). The
main goal is to verify the possibilities of this system.

The authors have many experiences during the realization and operation of the Research
Polygons placed at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava. These experiences can be
used for future constructions of similar research objects. This article will discuss the
possibilities of realization and construction of Polygons and show some results.
