DIOXINS AND FURANS EMISSIONS IN THE PRIMARY STEEL SECTOR

ABSTRACT

Dioxins and furans (PCDDs/Fs) are organic compounds obtained without intention, in very small concentrations in emissions or byproducts/wastes of processes. They have very high toxicity and variable with a high potential hazard to the environment and people. They have as main emission sources the combustion processes and some chemical, photochemical and enzymatic reactions. At present in many European countries a significant emission source of PCDDs/Fs is metallurgical industry (ferrous and non – ferrous). In primary iron and steel sectors the sinter plants are the main emission source of PCDDs/Fs in the environmental factors and contaminated wastes. This paper aims to analyze the formation of dioxins and furans in the primary steel sector. Were shows the sinter plant and the sources of PCDDs/Fs. The quantities of dioxins and furans emitted in the sintering process at different time periods are calculated and analyzed. Also the possibilities to reduce these emissions in this sector are presented. Data for the calculation are based on processes from one integrated steel mill in Romania and data from literature.
