DEVELOPING AN INTEROPERABLE URBAN GEO-DATA MODEL: AriBIS

ABSTRACT

The interoperability of geo-data means to share geo-data from different sources for various thematic services and e-government applications. To test geo-data interoperability, model-based approach is applied and verified with Urban GIS data model. In this study, Urban GIS and 3D geo-data models were determined, such as CityGML, IMGeo in the Netherland, ATKIS in Germany, and OS Vector Map in England. Structure and contents of these models were examined for managing geo-data effectively. Current geo-data standards such as BÖHHBÜY- Large Scale Map Information Production Regulation and Urban GIS projects were investigated in Turkey. After analyzing current geo-data models and user needs, AriBIS geo-data model was developed at large scale level. This model includes 3D geo-data themes such as transportation, building, hydrography, landscape, infrastructure, urban furniture.
Case applications were developed in a plot area covering Istanbul Technical University (ITU) campus area. This area can be accepted as an urban area beside university and institutional functions. Datasets were produced for this campus area, depending on AriBIS geo-data model. AriBIS geo-database was built on both ArcGIS and PostreSQL+GIS environment. Web, desktop, and paper-based products were produced by these databases. AO and A3 sized paper maps were produced for institutional needs such as Campus, Transportation, and Night map. Flex based web application was developed for institutional introduction. After publishing open web services, mobile applications were developed for maintaining geo-datasets. In this way, AriBIS geo-data models were examined and tested on various application environment.
