PROSPECTIVE VIRTUAL SIMULATION OF VENTILATION NETWORKS

ABSTRACT

Worldwide, underground coal mining is placed second in the ranking of the most
hazardous workplaces. In order to extract coal from the underground there is developed
a complex of mine workings, both vertically and horizontally, of multilevel structure,
which may totalize an equivalent length of tens of kilometres.
In order to achieve the occupational health and safety conditions at the level of the mine
workings, proper ventilation has to be ensured. For the optimization of ventilation
networks there are used specialized software, respectively a proper hardware support.
The CANVENT software can model, solve and simulate ventilation networks,
regardless of their complexity.
The ventilation network of Vulcan mining unit has undergone a restructuring process
which has led to the operation with only one main ventilation station. Before updating
the ventilation network, there have been carried out simulations in order to highlight the
changes which may occur from the quantitative point of view, respectively the changes
in the flowing direction at the level of each branch related to the updated network. This
paper work presents details regarding the ventilation network, before and after the
restructuring, as well as an analysis on the air flows repartition on the simulation
achieved for the restructured ventilation network.
