ABSTRACT

Burning fossil fuels is associated with the generation of a variety of waste and
by-products. The aim of the present study is the chemical and petrographical
characterization of some samples of lignite and residues (fly-ash and bottom ash)
resulting in Turceni power plant, in Romania.
Petrographic analyses were carried out with the goal of identifying the rank of the coal
by vitrinite reflectance and its composition by maceral analysis and, for highlighting the
behavior of organic and mineral material during combustion. Optical texture of lignite
derived from reactive and inert components of coal provides information on the active
surface which is gasified by oxygen, and thus on the intrinsic reactivity of the solid
residue, aspect which is extremely important in practice.
The results of this study may provide information which can be applied throughout
power plant operation and for environmental impact studies.
