ABSTRACT

The theme of natural parks in the Calabria region in southern Italy, is strategically
important for the development prospects of the whole region. The Calabrian system of
national parks is the result of centuries of history, not always virtuous, between
protectionist impulses and systemic blocks the to the formation process of the protected
areas.
The system of nature in Calabria has now undisputed primates that are derived more or
less directly from its geographical position, its topography and its history, which has
conditioned the actual presence of very high levels of biodiversity protection. The
economic substrate, however, correlated with demographic and welfare indicators,
clearly reveals the relationship level between extreme environmental quality and the
continuing and persistent structural backwardness of these areas. The Pollino case is
emblematic of this convergence of factors, a microcosm for the most part intact, which
show a recessive income situation without obvious signs of business activism.
All this despite being a heavily populated area, with fragmented communalities and
industrial areas that was never able to influence the development of the territory.
Significant environmental quality, despite the territorial and economic fragility,
which can become itself the catalyst of development phenomenon.
The possible Models to intercept this development are based on the enhancement of the
rediscovery of local identities and the ability to activate virtuous processes of
integration of sector policies, in the micro-economic fields that the territory express.
