PHOTOCATALYTIC ACTIVITY OF NANOCRYSTALLINE GAHNITE (ZNAL2O4) SYNTHESIZED BY BALL MILLING

ABSTRACT

This work is focused on the structure characterization of nanocrystalline
mechanochemically synthesized gahnite (ZnAl2O4) and its relationship to photocatalytic
properties. The photocatalytic activity of the samples was tested with Chromium Acidic
Black Diazo Dye (Colour Index Acid Black 194), which is used for colouring textiles
and discharging it is being strictly forbidden. The results showed, that tested
nanocrystalline ZnAl2O4 (3.8 eV, corresponding to 327 nm i.e. UV light) prepared by
single-step mechanochemical synthesis reaches almost the same degree of conversion as
standard reference photocatalyst TiO2 Degussa P25 (3.2 eV, corresponding to λ=388
nm) under UV light irradiation. In this work the correlation between structure and
photocatalytic activity have been discussed.
