ABSTRACT

Any mineral resource, and therefore coal, is practically non-renewable, which means
that once exploited, coal reserves are dwindling. Irrational exploitation of coal leads to
permanent and unjustified loss of reserves and poor quality products. Because of these
issues, a conservation of coal reserves is necessary, which primarily involves a
judicious management and optimum use of them. In the selective excavation of lignite
deposits a blending between coal and important quantities of sterile minerals appears,
resulting in a decreased quality of the extracted coal by increasing the ash content and
by reducing the calorific power. This paper work presents the main sources of dilution
of lignite extracted in the open pits from Oltenia and the effects on production quality
compared with the quality required by the beneficiary.
