SALT STRUCTURES OF NORTH-CASPIAN BASIN AND ASSOCIATED DRILLING PROBLEMS

ABSTRACT

In the article problems encountered with drilling of salt structures in North-Caspian
basin are discussed. Drilling difficulties caused by the chemical and physical properties
of the salt layers, and tectonics induced by these properties. Most of the North-Caspian
hydrocarbon reserves (over 150 billion of tons) are covered by thick salt (up to 5 km),
which deformed in domes and depressions. To overcome this obstacle (drill through),
several state-of-the-art technologies have to be applied, with the massive efforts of
scientists, engineers and geologists. This work describes some of them.
