GEODYNAMIC AND SEISMICITY IN ALBANIA

ABSTRACT

Albanides are part of Meditteranean Alpin wrinkled belt. Alps continue direction south
east Dinarites and Helenides. Southern Alps lay along eastern coastlines of Adriatic and
Ionaian seas and through Eugenian sea goes through Tauride forming the Dinaride-
Albanide-Helenide-Taurid arc.
Current Tectonics of Albania is documented by neotectonics indices and by a large
number of medium size earthquakes. Focal mechanisms suggest the existence of current
shortening across the external Albanides whereas internal Albanides are affected by EW
to N-S extension. To investigate the kinematics of Albanides, we integrate
continuous and episodic GPS measurements with focal mechanisms of the Regional
Centroid Moment Tensor catalogue.
Albanide’s structure is fragmented from a system of tectonical breakups of after Pliocen
period with a Southeast-Northwest extent for the outer zones and mainly South-North
for the inner ones. At the same time the Albanides are penetrated also from two
transversal breakups, Vlore-Elbasan-Diber and Shkoder-Peje. The last one divides
Albanides from Dinarides.
