ANALYSIS OF DIFFERENT TERRAIN CORRECTION TECHNIQUES IN GRAVITY FIELD MODELING

ABSTRACT

The main purpose of studying detailed gravity data is to provide a better understanding of the geological layers and density of topographic masses. The gravity method is a relatively cheap and very efficient, especially by using airborne techniques.
Measurements of gravity provide information about densities of the Earth subsurface. There is a wide range in density among rock types, and therefore geologists can make inferences about the distribution of mass density. In the case of gravity surveys by
using airborne techniques, especially in mountainous areas, the use of rigorous terrain reduction, such as Residual Terrain Model (RTM) reduction (Forsberg, 1984) would contribute to the stabilization of the downward continuation process, since the removal of terrain effects will limit the short wavelength variability of the gravity data
significantly (Forsberg, 1984). In the sense of mineral exploration, The Bouguer anomalies are ideal for geophysics because they show the effects of different rock densities in the subsurface. During the gravity surveys by using airborne techniques,
terrain corrections prove to be critical even with rugged or moderate topography. This paper is focused on research of using the most appropriate terrain corrections techniques for gravity reduction, especially aspects of application of different reference surfaces for
the calculation of such corrections. For the calculations of topographic corrections the mean density of rock has been used (2670kg/m³).
