COMPARISON BETWEEN TOTAL STRAIN ENERGY AND CRUSHING ENERGY USING BOND’S INDEX IN GRANITE

ABSTRACT

The crushing energy in mineral processing industry is usually determined by experimental Bond’s index regardless mechanical parameters of rocks. Bond’s index is a comminution parameter which was defined by Bond. In this study, with the purpose of correlating the strain energy of rock to the corresponding energy estimated by Bond’s index, cubic Granite specimens are simulated between two rigid jaws and are broken due to movement one of the jaws against the other. The specimens are modeled as elasto-plastic medium and Mohr-Colomb failure criterion is used. The finite difference method is used to model the fracture in the Granite specimens. The total strain energy of the specimens is calculated and the results are obtained using FLAC3D code. The determined total strain energy is compared with the energy consumption that is estimated by Bond’s index. The results show that during size reduction process, shear and tensile fractures occur simultaneously. Also, it is predicted that the shear fracture is the dominant fracture mode in the Granite fracture process.
