ABSTRACT

This paper presents a comparative study based on numerical and experimental results, regarding the single lap joints (SLJs) between pultruded glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite elements that are bonded with epoxy adhesives. The main aspects that were investigated by experimental and numerical approaches consisted in the characteristics of the failure mechanisms and the strain distribution along the bond length at different loading stages. For the experimental program 25 specimens were prepared by varying the bond length (70, 100, 150 mm), the type and the thickness of the adhesives (1, 2, 3 mm). All specimens were loaded in tension up to failure, aiming to induce the shear effect in the adhesive layer. During the loading stage, the following parameters were monitored and recorded: the tensile force, the strains variation along the bond length and the relative displacements between the GFRP composite members. Based on the results of the experimental program, all the specimens were numerical modelled using ANSYS Workbench software. The outcomes of the numerical simulations, based on 3D FEM analysis, demonstrated that the numerical results in good agreement with the ones obtained experimentally.

Keywords: single lap joints, glass fibre reinforced polymer composite, experimental program, finite element modelling.
