MODELING AND CLASSIFICATION OF ROOF ROCK BEHAVIOR IN COAL MINES CONSIDERING CONDITIONS OF EAST ALBORZ COAL MINES

ABSTRACT

Many researches have been carried out in field of “Roof rock behavior in coal mines",
most of them concentrated on mines development networks; but a less attention have
been paid to assessment and classification of roof strata behavior over long wall coal
mining panels. In this paper, It has been attentioned to roof strata behavior over long
wall coal mining panels in East Alborz coal mines. Intensive field work and laboratory
analyses that discuses the influence of various parameters on roof rock behavior of the
stratified rock. Most effective of them are: uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), tensile
strength, moisture sensitivity, joints, bedding thickness, orientation and dips of
discontinuities relevant to face and surface of working area. However, based on the
proposed system, the roof rock over a long wall panel is assigned a rating from 15.5 to
100, with a higher rating corresponding more stable roof. According to this rating
system, a roof can be classified into five modes: extremely unstable, highly unstable,
medium stable, good stable, highly stable. The obtained results can be used by mine
designer.
