STUDIES AND RESEARCH ON THE ECOLOGICAL MANAGEMENT AND RECOVERY OF RESIDUES FROM WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANTS

ABSTRACT

The paper presents a study on the ecological recovery of a waste from the urban waste water treatment plant, respectively the sewage sludge. The use of sewage sludge, is made through its use in agriculture and forestry, through incineration with energy recovery, or co-incineration.
According to EU legislation, sludge cannot be used in farming in raw form, so it must be treated before it is properly used. The paper presents an analysis of sludge samples from the decanters of the urban waste water treatment plant from Galati, to which they were determined the content of heavy metals and pH, taking into account its ecological use of the sludge. Determinations were made on samples of primary sludge, dehydrated sludge, sludge thickened with polyelectrolyte added, and sludge fermented from the anaerobic fermenter.
The current policies of the European Commission encourage the beneficial use of sludge on farmland, whose qualities must be compatible with the demands of the environment and human health. This is considered to be a long-term sustainable solution for ecological use of sewage sludge.
