EFFICIENCY STUDIES OF HOLLOW FIBER ORGANIC MEMBRANES IN RESTRAINING YEAST FROM WASTEWATER SUBJECTED TO ULTRAFILTRATION

ABSTRACT

The present paper aims at presenting experimentally obtained results to determine the effectiveness of organic polyacrylonitrile hollow fiber membranes as a result of retaining the content of yeast mixed with deionized water as a feed solution. The use of the membrane module in the ultrafiltration process of various chemical compounds existing in laboratory wastewater is a start for industrial applications. That is why it is necessary to know and to understand in detail the dependence between the operating parameters of the installations in which this type of membrane exists. The approach of the paper involves understanding the interaction of the yeast at the membrane fibers that serve the ultrafiltration process as well as the processing of the results obtained in order to determine the efficiency of this type of membrane for a certain period of time. The results estimate a high retention of more than 50% for the yeast contained in the membrane module feed, especially in the first filtration cycles when the permeate obtained has the highest quality as a result of membrane renewal. At the same time, the formation of the layer of matter retained on the surface of the membrane will indicate that the retention efficiency is great especially if the time in which the material, respectively the yeast, accumulates is smaller. The detailed and explication results obtained on this topic is presented in this paper.
