ABSTRACT

The research area is located in Calimani National Park, Eastern Carpathians, northern
Romania. About 2% of the park surface was seriously affected by the sulfur exploitation
during 1977-1993. More than 300 ha of vegetation were destroyed revealing the rock
surface, which was then excavated and deposited in four heaps close to the excavation.

The main goal of this research was to map the favorability areas for natural recovery of
the vegetation and the probability for plants to spread on barren substrates.
The study uses a plots network and GIS application in order to generate a map with the
main vegetation patch types.

This map was obtained by compiling field data and ortophotoplans and the following
patch types were obtained: patches with vegetation, patches with bio-potential, patches
without vegetation, heaps plateaus and embankments. Observed within these patches
29 plant species were identified, including bryophytes, lichens and fungi.

Data and map analysis showed positive correlation between substrate type and
vegetative species diversity. Plant growth was not facilitated in areas seriously affected
by excavation with high concentration of pollutants. A positive correlation between
micro-geomorphology and vegetation expansion was noted mostly on the heap’s
plateaus, where plants grow in micro-valleys formed by barren deposition.
