3D LITHOLOGICAL MODEL OF ROIL16 GROUNDWATER BODY

Vasile, T.
Abstract:
“Body of groundwater” means a distinct volume of groundwater within an aquifer or aquifers. This paper has as main objective creating a three-dimensional lithological model using borehole data for ROIL16 – Plain Vlasia groundwater body. RockWorks 15 is a software package for geological data management and visualization and it was chosen for analysing sub-surface data. The initial characterisation requires the collection of detailed information and data, such as geological and hydrogeological characteristics, the characteristics of the superficial deposits and soils, an inventory of associated surface systems, an estimation of the flow directions. The information necessary in creating this model was collected from water wells of National Network Monitoring. The data that was used reffered to lithology, top and base filter, depth to static water level, drawdown etc. From this data were created 2-dimensional point and contour maps, plan-view maps, logs, cross sections and profiles. In addition there is an array of 3D diagrams: logs, surfaces, fence diagrams and solid models. The model was simplified by categorising the rocks, using as criteria their hydraulic conductivity. There is a lack of continuity of some of the geological strata between upstream and downstream areas. To control these modeling anomalies, these thin units were created by kriging thickness values instead of top or bottom geological contact elevation values. Control surfaces of well defined geological contacts were also used to constrain the interpolation of these thin geological units. The phreatic aquifer structure was identified by analysing the simplified lithological model of the groundwater body. The 3D geological model was developed as tool to consolidate and improve the designer’s ability to visualize all of the available geological and hydrogeological information.
