There is vast amount of resources in landfills worldwide which are strategic for circular economy. Disposed resources become available for society if extracted in symbiosis with relevant remediation principles to avoid pollution. Properties of waste fine fraction can be altered to serve as functional construction material in landfills. The aim of society and scientists is to find sustainable resources recovery potential for landfill waste. The economic model where natural resources after use are simply thrown away, is called linear economy. Circular economy aims that products are collected at the end of their life, materials are separated and recycled or reused as new products or energy. It is important in frame of circular economy to: 1) estimate recovery perspectives as secondary resource for reuse of waste useless part as functional construction material; 2) investigate interactions among remnant pollutants and organic matter in landfill fine fraction with the focus on remediation performance; 3) provide scientifically argumented recommendations for land recovery and ecosystem revitalization in landfills in circular economy perspective. The main questions of the discussion will be: (1) conservation of landfill space; (2) reduction in landfill area; (3) elimination of a potential source of contamination; (4) mitigation of an existing contamination source; (5) energy recovery; (6) recycling of recovered materials; (7) reduction in management system costs; (8) site redevelopment

The Varna microbial carbonate reefs, widely known as the‘Upright Stones’, аrе limestone columns of natural origin, formed 50 million years ago in the Eocene marine sands of the Dikilitash Formation near Varna. These unique geological formations of scientific and aesthetic value are among the most impressive natural phenomena in Bulgaria. Varna reefs occur in 18 outcrops with more or less reduced height due to the natural weathering. They do not have complete fossil analogue described from elsewhere in the world, so there are many hypotheses for their origin: from remains of ancient temples and castles to fossilized forests or carbonate-cemented channels of upward migrating hydrocarbon-bearing fluids. However, similar reef-building of miniatolls occurs in modern environment in the Shark Bay, Australia, where stromatolite moulds are in an initial stage of column building. Regardless of the erosional processes, the fossilized Varna reefs have kept most of the elements of the modern miniatolls. At the end of the last century, their genesis was examined in the light of phytogenetic hypothesis, according to which they are bacterial-algal bioherms corresponding to recent atolls and miniatols in the modern oceans and seas. Along with their scientific and aesthetic value these geosites are also wonderful fossil deposits. Richly fossiliferous sands contain abundant shells of large foraminifera – nummulites and discocyclines. Rarely fossil bivalves, gastropods and nautiluses are also encountered.

The idea of debating Sustainable Settlements is to be understood as a wish and challenge to carefully check out available frameworks of existing and emerging methodologies and procedures in order to improve the technological, economic, environmental and social sustainability of human settlements. Based on a holistic comprehensive sustainability approach in the given existing frameworks the focus would be on finding specific actions and interventions which would enable technological progress, social improvement and sectorial collaboration as well as reducing unwanted negative impacts and consequences in technological, environmental and socio-political fields. As a tangible result of the workshop, a kind of a catalogue of requirements for sustainable settlements can be delivered, i.e. specific demands to be accomplished in order to become a sustainable settlement, what should be fulfilled by taking into consideration regional differences regarding climate conditions and environmental pollution, regarding economic status, regarding socio-political situation.At the end of the workshop, after having the catalogue of requirements for sustainable settlements, if the time is affording, it is intended to carry out a case-study regarding shaping sustainable settlements in a certain region or for a certain situation, also in accordance to the interest of workshop participants.
