The redevelopment of the railway network in Krakow has been ongoing for some years now. Efforts undertaken in order to improve the comfort and quality of travel have an influence on functional and spatial changes in the surroundings of modernised railway stops. The redevelopment of elements of the railway network is essential from the point of view of the possibility of supplementing public transport, in addition to affecting the establishment of new circulation nodes that provide services to a significant number of users. An analysis of the phenomena taking place in these areas has made it possible to determine the scale and consequences of introducing changes both in the functional and the spatial and compositional sphere. The selected stops are located within the city's varied functional and spatial structure. Their location is a result of past assumptions concerning the shaping of Krakow's railway network. They were not modernised for many years due to declining interest in railroad travel within the Krakow agglomeration, which was a result of the limiting of the number and quality of connections. At present, the development of suburban areas, particularly in places serviced by the railway network, Krakow's circulation problems and efforts aimed at reducing air pollution in the city can lead to interest in using railway transport, particularly in the case of residents of suburban areas. Of course, this is not solely associated with the current modernisation of the stops themselves and their adaptation to users' needs, but also an increase in the accessibility and quality of railway travel itself. The modernisation of stops affects the shape of their surroundings, as well as their function and form. In the majority of cases it is partially defined, but requires transformation, particularly in their immediate vicinity, in addition to a skilful blending of new solutions into existing urban tissue. The selected areas that accompany railway stops that are undergoing modernisation will be analysed in terms of their functional and spatial relations, the quality of the space that they form and their linkages with their surroundings. Efforts undertaken in terms of modernising the stops focus on the redevelopment of the stops themselves, their platforms and roof covers, as well as linking them with the existing circulation infrastructure. The analysed examples, however, do not form fully attractive public spaces, the formation of which would be associated with greater interference with their surroundings. While executing such development projects, we should strive to limit the negative effects on the existing urban tissue, particularly residential tissue. The dominance of the solutions that are currently in use within urban space can lead to a decrease in the value of nearby real estate. The modernised railway stops should ultimately become the seeds for attractive spaces, supplemented by a varied programme of functions blended into the existing structure.
