MICROBIOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF THE WASTE ALGAL BIOMASS ALONG ROMANIAN BLACK SEA COAST

Abstract:
Black Sea is one of the largest inland seas in the world and is vulnerable to land – based pollution pressure from its littoral area that causes the degradation of the aquatic ecosystems through eutrophication. Sometimes were recorded at the Romanian littoral a macroalgae mass development, especially by the group green macro-algae, Ulva, Enteromorpha and Cladophora species which are present in associations succeeding in all the year. A comparative study of waste algal biomass microbial charge was done in order to assess the possibilities of combining and identifying the optimal level of incorporation of this raw material in achieving a potential biofertilizer product. The microbial loading problem has been the priority of our study because this is the most important factor involved in improvement of this biological waste for bio-agriculture purpose. The residual biomass along Romanian Black Sea coast consist of mixture between green, brown and red macroalgae, waste invertebrate organisms, raw plant material Danube river origin, were collected seasonal in the period January 2017 – January 2018. Analysis methodology applied to waste marine biomass has been based on aqueous extracts obtained from fresh and dried biomass samples. For the microbial charge determination, the serial dilutions method has been applied and the qualitative and quantitative identification by the colony forming units reported to the volume unit, total coliforms, fecal coliforms, total streptococcus, fecal streptococcus, Shigella, Salmonella sp., Staphylococcus aureus, Campylobacter spp., was realized. As there are a great number of macrophyte algal species in mixture with waste invertebrate organisms (crabs, mollusks and exoskeleton) in the Romanian Black Sea littoral area, the microbiological characterization on their microbial charge is periodically necessary for health evaluation of touristic beach environmental. The microbiological characterization assessed also, that the mixed algae residual biomass could be successfully recovered in the aim to obtain a new ecological fertilizer with low bacterial charge.
