MANAGEMENT OF HAZARDOUS WASTE IN POLAND

Turlej, T.; Banas, M.
Abstract:
Technological processes and human activities generate large amounts of waste, including streams of hazardous waste. This type of waste is a serious threat to the natural environment, therefore it is important to choose the right recovery process or disposal of this type of waste. The article presents legal aspects concerning the management of hazardous waste, methods of disposal and the structure of hazardous waste management in Poland. The criteria for the selection of technology have been presented as well as technical-economic and ecological conditions. The choice of the method for hazardous waste disposal depends on many factors, e.g. physical, chemical and biological properties, the possibility of transforming waste into a form with less nuisance. Selection of an appropriate method reduces the adverse impact on environmental components (water resources, atmosphere). Side effects accompanying the activities of hazardous waste plants and the costs of particular methods of disposal and recovery of hazardous waste have been presented.
