ASPECTS REGARDING THE VARIABILITY OF GEOTECHNICAL PARAMETERS RELATED TO SWELLING POTENTIAL OF CLAYEY SOILS USING STATISTICAL TOOLS

ABSTRACT

A large number of structural damages reported during the past decades around the world associated with a high geotechnical risk have highlighted the major attention that should be given to the expansive soil category in engineering practice. For avoiding or mitigating the effects of clay expansiveness on civil engineering structures before construction, the identification of soil parameters related to swelling behavior is considered essential in solving geotechnical engineering problems. This paper aims to analyze specific indices affecting the swelling character mainly based on state, physical and mechanical properties derived from experimental testing carried out on an extensive amount of samples. A parametric analysis of soil parameters using various correlations proposed in classification systems in terms of swell potential was performed. Several statistical tools to examine swell parameters were considered in order to provide indicators of variability of soil properties using different measurement data sets. The resulted statistical characteristics reflect the degree of spatial distribution of soil characteristics based on individual values for investigated sites. A combined deterministic and statistical estimation can provide significant soil information to be used in assessing geotechnical conditions and as valuable data input to reliability analyses for design and construction projects.
