ANTHROPOGENIC SOIL COMPACTION PROBLEMS BASED ON RECYCLED CONCRETE AGGREGATE EXAMPLE

ABSTRACT

Construction and Demolition (C&D) materials which consists mostly of concrete debris were deposited on landfills. The development of road network results in an increasing demand for building aggregates which are part of the road construction unbound subbase. For decrease of investment costs and prevention of spoiling natural resources, the C&D materials, such as fly ash, steel slag or recycled concrete aggregates (RCA), were applied as a subbase mix.
Among many properties influencing the quality of road material, the crushing venerability is the one which could impact the bearing capacity and mechanical properties of anthropogenic unbound mix. This article presents the results of grain crushing tests on RCA with various moisture and compaction properties. The results were then used to form conclusions about impact of moisture content on RCA crushing abilities. The crushing phenomena was studied with application of Proctor’s compaction method. The susceptibility of grains to crushing plays important role during in situ compaction process. The changes in gradation composition may impact on optimum moisture content and therefore lead to lower dry density of compacted RCA.
