ABSTRACT

Nowadays, groundwater flow modeling is a common method used to solve complicated hydrogeological issues. The main advantages of numerical modeling are speed, accuracy and reliability of performed calculations. In hydrogeological software to groundwater flow and mass transport simulation, the most frequently used are simulators from Modflow group (Finite Difference Method), as well as FEFLOW (Finite Element Method). The develop of simulators follows to implementation of new computational algorithms, but comprehensive packages tend to make efficient inputting and editing data, GIS integration and to enable so called conceptual modeling. Simulation packages are licensed as a freeware or as a commercial software. That packages allows for groundwater flow and mass transport simulations, parameters estimations, conceptual modeling, and others. Some of packages are fully independent, others programs need external applications for solving selected problems.
An article presents currently used software for groundwater flow modeling. A simplified characteristic of simulators (flow engines) was made and also comprehensive groundwater modeling software platforms was presented, emphasized main directions of their development.
