In this research, application of GIS software programs in thematic mapping specifically for historical maps, has been undertaken. The following question has been asked: how does GIS support mapping process. This article presents the results of studies on the functionality of GIS software. This article presents a methodology related to the study of GIS tools functionality to solve a specific task.
The research has taken into account interactive historic map, which stages of preparation have been described in the paper.
Based on the analysis of the thematic map, the main required features of GIS software (major GIS functions) have been defined as: data management, input data, data visualization, data processing and providing data. Analysis used programs MapInfo version 12.5, ArcGIS 10.1, Quantum GIS 2.8.1
In the presented approach of the problem authors identified 6 major groups of functions described by 29 criteria. Developed evaluation system defines functional requirements for GIS software.
Based on established criteria and sub-criteria, containing detailed description of the requirements and conditions, the authors evaluated the functionality of examined programs.
Each sub-criterion assigned a weight, and introduced the corresponding score to provide an objective assessment of the functionality. For measurable criteria assigned points evaluation, which was calculated based on proposed mathematical formulas, for the irrational criteria introduced gradation preferences.
The study of functionality was conducted by using verification tests of software on the most basic level - at the level of single functions effect regardless of different program elements. The tests were carried out on measurement samples for each application by testing only one aspect, regardless of different program elements.
The experiments and theoretical analysis of the GIS software package functionality allowed classification according to the degree of meeting the needs of the user.
Our study is suggestion to examine functionalities of GIS programs and their usability in a systematic way. The results will serve as an important reference for cartographers, historians, geographers and publicists.
