THE IMPACT OF SIRIU RESERVOIR UPON THE WATER AND SEDIMENT FLOW REGIME OF THE BUZAU RIVER, EASTERN ROMANIA

ABSTRACT
Our analysis is aimed to provide an estimation of the impact that the Siriu Reservoir has upon the water and sediment volumes transited along a 25 km sector of the Buzău River, stretching from 18 kilometers upstream the reservoir`s end to 500 meters downstream the dam.
To achieve this, we have compared the water (liquid) and sediment (solid) inflow volumes determined for Sita Buzăului river station on the Buzău River (situated at approximately 18 km upstream the reservoir and representing the natural flow regime) with the liquid and solid outflow volumes calculated for Siriu Dam river station.
Our research has been conducted in two main directions: the first direction was to determine the influence exerted by the Siriu Reservoir upon the hydrological regime of the Buzău River over a long period of time (1991 – 2014), based on the annual and the mean monthly multiannual water and sediment volumes calculated for both Sita Buzăului river station and the dam station, while the second direction was to observe the behavior of the reservoir during an extreme hydrological event, such as the March 22nd – April 30th 2007 flood, the most important flood that occurred along the Buzău River since the reservoir has been put into operation (1994).
In this particular situation we have taken into account the daily inflow and outflow water and sediment volumes recorded during the entire high – water period at Sita Buzăului river station as well as at the dam station.
Our results indicate that the impact of the Siriu Reservoir upon the liquid flow of the Buzău river is very low, the alteration of the natural conditions being insignificant (approximately 1%), while the solid flow is moderately impacted, the sediment volumes calculated at the dam being approximately 20% lower than the inflow ones.
