In this work are presented the results for assessment of mercury contamination in samples of vegetation (leaves) and soils from Iasi city area. A number of 53 topsoil samples and 53 leaves samples from surrounding area have been investigated. The mercury content from the investigated samples was determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry with Zeeman Effect (Lumex RA-915+ Mercury Analyzer coupled with the RP-91C pyrolysis attachment). Mercury concentration were higher in urban topsoil in comparison with the mercury concentration in leaves, ranging between 6-433 mg·kg-1·10-3 (with an average concentration of 90.15 mg·kg-1·10-3) for soils and between 0.7 – 31.3 mg·kg-1·10-3 (with an average concentration of 8.78 mg·kg-1·10-3) for leaves. The comparative analysis of mercury in soil and respectively in leaf, for each sampling site, pointed out a significant correlation between the mercury content in both investigated environmental components, proved by the medium bioaccumulation coefficient. The main source of mercury content in soil, as well in vegetation, was the old municipal waste landfill (currently closed), which is releasing an important quantity of mercury in the environment. Also, these results could be attributed to the intense road traffic in several areas located in overcrowded areas, mostly in road crossing, railway traffic. The high mercury content in soils can be translocated in vegetation, followed by its release in the atmosphere, which should be considered a risk for the inhabitants’ health.
