ABSTRACT
Through its destructive character, every excavation, especially the large ones and the rescue ones, requires meticulous planning.
The role of topography in archaeology, as has been established, do not summarize at the drawing up the topographical plans of archaeological sites. Topographical plan represents only a tool and not an purpose in itself. The purpose is to represent the whole of an archaeological site, in all its complexity.
An essential element for the approach which we adopted in this paper is the Archaeological Cadastre which, in accordance with the latest legislation in the field, is considered as a specific information system. Thus, within its, recording and evidence of archaeological sites is an activity of utmost importance because are provided the minimum requirements necessary to protect the sites.
In order to inventory and evidence of archaeological sites affected by mining at Roşia Montană have been completed the following steps: carrying aut the topographical survey, data processing, editing digital plan, editing digital terrain model, creating the “Data sheet of archaeological site“.
The present paper is intended to be an overview of the topographical echipaments, methods and techniques, and the way in which, through its final results, topography can sustain, support and assist in the management, organization and exploitation of archaeological researches.
