ABSTRACT
The paper is focused on application of statistical distribution functions for characterization of the strength properties of intact rock and rock mass. The results for uniaxial compressive strength assessment of two rock types are presented. The rock mass was characterized by a model rock strength defined by the ICONA method. The assessment issued from the data acquired during the excavation of Branisko exploratory gallery by a full-face tunnel boring machine. ICONA, acronym for Inverse CONtinuous method for Assessment of rock mass properties, provides very dense data on TBM performance enabling the indirect determination of rock mass properties based on mathematical model of rock-cutting tool interaction. Performance monitoring of the tunnel boring machine WIRTH TB-II-330H/M, which was deployed in excavation of the Branisko exploratory tunnel, provided a large database of parameters characterizing not only the TBM performance, but also the excavated rock environment, for further investigation.
