ABSTRACT
Materials used in industrial process are heterogenous mixtures of variable composition, various character and they are assessed individually. Interdisciplinary research of geomaterials (often toxic substances) accumulated in desludging sites and all their effects on environment is highly relevant. In Slovak Republic, there are 10 registered industrial desludging sites. Large amounts of deposited materials are represented by lime sediments. The paper presents results of investigations into the physical and mechanical properties of lime sediment bedded on impoundment of chemical factory at Novaky. The impoundment of plain type with external dam and with single use of transport water is in operation since 1970. In the period 1970 – 2001 the lime sludges were deposited hydraulically. In May 2001, the sluicing of the sludges to the impoundment was finished. The sludges are sedimented in the bays in the factory. After the drainning-off of the transport water, the sediment is extracted and transported to impoundment where it is continually dumped. Survey works at the desludging site focused on comparison of properties of floated and mechanically deposited lime waste. Effect of sludge deposition method (floating replaced by surfacing) was apparent in all observed parameters.
