MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS APPLIED TO THE HYDROCHEMICAL STUDY OF ACID MINE DRAINAGES AND SURROUNDINGS SUPERFICIAL WATERS (NORTH PORTUGAL)

ABSTRACT

The present work applies the principal component analysis to the study of the chemistry of the acid mine drainages (AMD) of Adoria mine (North Portugal) and surroundings superficial waters. Samples of superficial and mine drainage water were collected for one year, bi-monthly, with pH, temperature, Eh, conductivity and HCO3 determined in situ with chemical analyses of SO4, Ca, K, Mg, Na, Cl, Ag, As, Bi, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn and Cd. In the mine, there are acidic waters, with low pH and significant concentrations of SO4, and metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd and Ni). The data matrix used in the analysis consisted of 60 samples and 17 variables (pH, HCO3, SO4, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Cl, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, As, Cd, Co and Ni). Principal component analysis shows a clear separation between AMD galleries and AMD tailings, with tailings having a greater level of contamination, as did the waters under direct influence, with an ionic charge characterized by HCO3, Ca, K, Cl, Na, Mg, Zn, Co, and Cu and Pb association. An abundance of sulfide masses in the tailings explains this mixed typology and reveals influences by both silicate hydrolysis and oxidation of the sulfides.
