MULTI CRITERIA DECISION SUPPORT FOR THE BEST ALLOCATION OF THE PRIMARY SCHOOL AREA

ABSTRACT

Site-search problems for urban facility areas can be very complex when it involves different criteria. This kind of problems needs to search within wide solution spaces and evaluate lots of possibilities. Genetic algorithm is a searching and optimizing method which works similarly with the natural evolutional process. It searches for the best solution regarding the principle of survival of the fittest. The main purpose in this study is to create a multi-criteria decision support system for the allocation of the facility areas based on GA approach. The primary schools in Kadikoy Town are selected as a case study and they are reallocated with a GA-based model using GIS and Excel VBA programs. As a result, 48 school areas were selected to optimize the need for primary schools considering the school capacity and the max distance walked by a student.
