The paper reviews recent trends in fields of Geoinformatic and Internet Cartography. It explains how RIA (Rich Internet Application) concept and Cloud-computing technology can add new approaches for interactive web maps. The traditional approach of providing and working with Geographic Information System has still numerous limitations, especially in relation to data and programs which user needs “physically” stored in the computer. The general trend in all areas of information technologies is relocation, sharing and distribution both data and programs via the Internet environment. This innovative solution is possible especially due to cloud-computing approach; moreover in GIS field it is supplemented by application based on RIA concept. These topics were deliberately selected for their significant entry in recent years and a wide distribution in the current Web GIS applications. Few years ago, robust server-based solutions (typically map servers) dominate in literature articles, but there is a boom of implementing these technologies just nowadays. An interactive web application “BotanGIS” for Botanical garden in Olomouc was developed and tested with the aim to specific users’ group adaptation. In fact, two solutions built with both Flex and HTML5 technologies were compared. The case study compares its characteristics by three groups - visualization methods (e.g. transparency, rounded borders, jQuery effects), technological aspects (e.g. caching services, cloud computing) and management aspects (e.g. plugins & widgets, additional functions, editing). In resulting evaluation were analyzed benefits that both applications bring due to RIA concept.
