The Moravica River is one of the most significant right tributaries of the South Morava
River. Its total length is 43 km and basin area 640 km2. The municipal center of
Aleksinac with its urban, commercial, industrial and cultural areas is situated close to
the Moravica river estuary into South Morava river. Due to position of the settlement
and the natural river channel conditions, significant damages occurred in the past. Flood
flows were endangering the inhabited part of Aleksinac, residential and public
structures, church and road infrastructure, sometimes several times a year.

In the 1970s a dam was constructed on the river Moravica with multi-purpose reservoir
„Bovan“. The main purpose of the reservoir is water supply, followed by flood
protection of the downstream river reach.

However, flood protection has not yet been fully achieved. In order to install fully
operational flood protection system for the city of Aleksinac, preliminary calculations
were run under variety of scenarios. It was shown that the most significant damages
were on the right bank of the river. It was also estimated that the riverbed was capable
of evacuating 7 – 10 year return period flows of 40m³/s without flooding.

This paper presents the final solution for completion of Aleksinac urban area flood
protection system. The solution consists of two integrated parts: construction of closed
cassette and enlargement of flow capacity at bridge cross section.

For the river reach in the urban area, trapezoidal riverbed is designed on the bank
revetment in both minor and major riverbed, so that the closed cassette could be built in
order to prevent floods in the populated part of Aleksinac. A detailed calculation of
closed cassette construction is presented in the paper. A particular attention was paid to
the aesthetics and the needs of the people of Aleksinac. A bridge of historical value is
located at the beginning of the closed cassette, where bank revetment joins the fill of the
road. Its lower level does not satisfy required cross section for the design flood flow.
The solution of this problem is also presented in the paper.
