ABSTRACT

The paper has focused on the Russian Federation coal reserves, especially the Kuznieck
coal basin deposits. It describes basic characteristics of the coal produced, as well as the
coal extraction methods utilized. It provides for a brief comparison of coal mining
methods employed by the Russian Federation and in the Upper Silesian Coal basin
mines. Both surface and underground mining methods are used in Russia but only deep
underground mining is possible in the Upper Silesian Coal basin. The paper further
reports on quality comparisons made for coal produced in Russia and Upper Silesia,
namely the differences in classification of types of coal for different use.

Keywords: Coal basin, coal calorific value, hard coal, granularity, geological deposits,
deposit.
